"This is what the ancient mariners on earth used to do." Captain Flynn said softly as he looked out the bridge window.
"Ain't it a kick?" Ann said from her position at the helm. "No engine. Just the sails to keep us going. Every move we make has to take the current into account."
"Not what I was talking about," Flynn said.
"What?"
"You're right. No engine. No sound. It's peaceful out here, despite knowing that any moment we could be spilled into that great sea, that the vast distance between the stars would simply swallow us up, as if we never existed."
"Thanks for that, Captain Killjoy." Flynn saw her reflection in the glass. The expression was sour.
"Like I said, peaceful. Free. For them, the sea was the only master. Civilization, government, riches . . . the sea doesn't care about them, takes no notice of them. And neither do the stars. Here, we are free."
"Well you may be, but I'm not."
