“All right, so lay it on me while I get into these threads,” I said.
“Very well. You remember when I asked you to stand as proxy and cast my vote?”
“Vaguely. Something about letting women into the club, right?”
“Just so.”
“I’m still hazy on why you opposed them. Thought you would want more gals in there with you.”
“I would, so long as it is the right kind of women. I’m sure that a number of them would vapid trophy-girls on the arms of old and wealthy men just waiting for their expiration.”
“That’s pretty dark, Nikki.” I got the new shirt on after futzing with the cuff links for five minutes.
“Yet I notice you do not doubt the plausibility of the scenario. Regardless, that’s only tangentially related to what I need you for, tonight. The board has passed other measures throughout the year, each one seemingly innocuous, but I fear, together, they represent something more sinister.”
“Sinister? That’s a bold claim coming from a blood-sucking vampire.”
“Indeed. I do not use the term lightly.” I noted the lack of banter from her. She should have cracked a joke about being a vampire, but had let it go.
